From January through the first week of February, Illumination Dynamics supports ESPN’s busy winter schedule by providing equipment for the Winter X Games and the Super Bowl. ESPN’s 12th year of the Winter X Games didn’t disappoint with the world’s top extreme winter sports’ athletes competing for the coveted X Games Gold Medals. This year, for the first time, slope style was scheduled at night and the athletes competed under the lights making for a spectacular show. There was also complete 3D coverage providing spectacular images for those at home. The addition of these two components called for added lighting and power distribution. Toughing out the brutal weather in Aspen to assist in the broadcast was Illumination Dynamics for their 11th consecutive year. ID provided redundant power for the nine mobile units, two uplinks and the Super Pipe Control Tower that was the hub for all TV on Buttermilk Mountain. To power the lighting on the Slope Style and Super Pipe, as well as the catering, office trailers, athlete lounge, VIP tent, special guest tent and sponsor tents, ID supplied an additional eight generators, for a total of fourteen, ranging from 60kW to 300kW. In addition, ID was proud to supply the lighting gear needed for the X-Center shows, the award stage and the X-Fest area. Three tractor trailer loads of distribution, cables, transformers and more than half a dozen of ID’s broadcast crew also joined ESPN in the freezing cold to provide lighting and power for the four day event. The 16th Winter X Games was an amazing success and a project ID is always excited to be a part of.
As the X Games competition was preparing to begin, ID was also busy at Pan Am Plaza in Indianapolis, this year’s the site for the extensive TV compound used to broadcast ESPN’s coverage of the Super Bowl. ID provided redundant power for the compound which broadcast several ESPN programs such as: SportsCenter, NFL Countdown Shows, Mike and Mike, Sports Nation and ESPN International. In addition, ID powered the studio and demo field and provided an extensive lighting package to Lighting Designer Michael Franks. Inside the stadium ID provided lighting and a lighting director for ESPN’s international feed for the Deportes and ESPN Brazil pre- and post-game shows as well as their announce booth positions. While the weather in Indianapolis was a vast improvement over Aspen, the ID crew was equally busy, helping produce more than 110 hours of successful broadcast from Pan Am Plaza.

Extreme athletes gathered once again for the 17th Annual X Games put on by ESPN and for the 10th year, Illumination Dynamics is helping to broadcast the event. While BMXers, rally car racers, skateboarders, motocross bikers and more brought their nerves of steel to compete in the California heat, ID brought lighting, power, air conditioning and talented technicians to assist in the four-day live broadcast. In 2010, 35.4 million viewers in the U.S. tuned in during the four-day broadcast which was also aired in 175 different countries and territories outside the U.S.—to more than 382 million homes. Given that viewer numbers were expected to be just as high this year, ESPN and ID had their work cut out for them. Along with people watching at home, 138,525 attendees showed up to the 2010 X Games, a 24% increase from the year before, expecting to be impressed not only by the athletes, but by the on-site broadcasting displayed on screens at the event. Ensuring such a large event is broadcast correctly takes collaboration and incredibly hard work from an array of people and ID is proud to show up year after year with the equipment and staff needed to help make the X Games everything fans hope it will be.
About two city blocks, including LA Live, Staples Center, multiple parking lots and the Event Deck, were transformed into race tracks, skate parks, motocross and bike ramps, etc. in a matter of days in the hot Los Angeles sun. Employees from Illumination Dynamics, including the Director of Broadcast, Rich Williams and Generator Technician, Bruce Ward, begin visiting the site more than a month in advance to make sure incidentals were taken care of and nothing was left to chance or error. Approximately two weeks before the live broadcast began, ID brought paralleling generators which provide redundant powed, air conditioners and lights to the X Games broadcast compound. In addition, this year ID provided a hydrogen fuel cell to ESPN’s environmental department along with a hydrogen light tower with cooperation from Altergy Systems and Multiquip, Inc. Employees worked long hours rigging up redundant generators which ensured power was never lost during the live broadcast, and standby generators were set up for the TV offices and other portable trailers. This year, 100 tons of air conditioning was provided to the TV operations tent to keep the people working the X games, as well as the massive amounts of high tech equipment, cool. ID also provided HMI and LED lighting for the announce positions for the event and TV broadcast. ID’s skilled technicians and Broadcast department heads were always available on site so that any help needed was readily available. The Event Technical and Broadcast operations departments of ESPN worked tirelessly with ID’s Broadcast department to transmit a live broadcast that would impress viewers on a huge scale year after year.

Since 2002, Illumination Dynamics has provided lighting and power services to ESPN in order to help produce an entertaining and high quality “The ESPYS Red Carpet Countdown Show”. The ESPY Awards are an award show like no other on television, celebrating athletes and unforgettable moments in sports throughout the year and garnering more than 2.6 million viewers in 2010. Before attendees of the show enter the theatre they are photographed and interviewed in several stage set ups along the red carpet by ESPN celebrity hosts from shows such as SportsNation, SportsCenter and PTI: Pardon the Interuption, as well as ESPN International. Illumination Dynamics provides lighting and power for the outdoor interview stages, the red carpet and the pressroom for Post-Award Show interviews.
In the past two years The ESPY Awards have gone live so the Red Carpet Countdown Show has grown tremendously. Spanning the massive outdoor area of LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles, ID uses redundant generators to ensure power is uninterrupted and reliable, designs and provides lighting and even brings A/C units to cool the outdoor stages. In addition, this year “The Countdown Show” will feature a live band with moving lights and lighting design provided by Illumination Dynamics as well. In all, ID will provide over 120 lighting fixtures to “The Countdown Show” and the Post-Award Show interviews; Rich Williams, Director of Broadcast for ID and Lighting Director of “The Countdown Show”, had this to say of his ninth year working with ESPN on The ESPYS: “It’s always a pleasure working with ESPN on big shows like this. It’s partnering ID, a company with the right supplies and experience, with ESPN, a network that dominates sports broadcasting, and creating a show that really ‘wows’ people”. To see the Illumination Dynamics’ product at work and experience the best in sports broadcasting, tune in Wednesday, July 13th at 9 pm ET.

On Saturday, March 26th, the “Demo Room” at Illumination Dynamics’ Los Angeles location played host to a group of students and professionals eager to learn the ins and outs of some of the most popular moving lights in the industry. Lighting Director and Gaffer, Peter Pearce, worked alongside Mark Rudge, ID’s Director of Moving Lights, to host the three hour event complete with tour of the entire facility, control console demonstrations and a casual meet and greet accompanied by plenty of food and beverages. Earlier in the week Rudge and the Moving Lights Programmer, Robert Reyna, had assembled truss and lights to mimic what might be seen at a rock concert or TV studio, so that attendees of the Saturday event could visually experience the attributes and uses of five different moving lights. Using a Grand MA console, Reyna illustrated the capabilities of each individual type of light—including the the Vari-Lite VLX Wash, Clay Paky Alpha Profile and MAC 101 LED lights—while Rudge stood in front of the crowd explaining in detail how these amazing lights could improve films, photographs, concerts and more and how each one operated. Attendees of the event varied in age and background but all agreed that the lights were amazing and the new knowledge they had obtained was extremely helpful.

Jose Chavez, a 23 year old Broadcasting and Media Arts Student at Los Angeles Valley College, expressed that though he wasn’t necessarily looking into becoming a Lighting Designer, he wanted to “learn how to use lighting just in case because it’s always a good idea to have experience with any sort of equipment”. After the lighting demonstration Chavez was able to speak extensively with Rudge about his career and what else he should learn about lighting in the entertainment industry. Lighting Designers who attended were able to obtain price quotes and ensure that they were staying informed on the latest technology when lighting their own jobs. Attendees interested in how the control console operated were able to speak with Reyna and see hands-on how lighting an event really works. The workshop truly offered something specific for everyone as well as a broad and important learning experience.

More workshops are planned for the future and so check the website regularly for updates.
